How to treat UTI in children naturally
If your child is experiencing UTI symptoms and you are searching for a natural treatment, then keep reading…
I’ll walk you through how to treat UTI in children with homeopathy (and compare it to adults to see the difference in approach).
UTI in children is common: 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 30 boys will experience a UTI before they turn 16.
So, learning to break the pattern of recurrent UTIs is important to prevent a painful chronic UTI cycle that can start in childhood and worsen in adult years.
Homeopathy is an excellent choice for this task, as it’s a deep-healing medicine with the ability to fix the root cause. And it’s safe, effective, gentle, and free from toxins or harsh chemicals, so even tiny babies and other sensitive souls can use it.
Key differences: UTI in children vs adults
Symptoms in children (especially babies and toddlers)
- Fever (often the only sign)
- Irritability, crying, especially while urinating
- Poor feeding or vomiting
- Foul-smelling or cloudy urine
- Incontinence or regression in toilet training
- Abdominal or back pain (older children)
Symptoms in adults and older children
- Strong, persistent urge to urinate
- Burning sensation when urinating
- Pelvic pain (in women)
- Cloudy or bloody urine
- Fatigue or malaise (especially in the elderly)
Causes and risk factors
Children:
Structural abnormalities (such as vesicoureteral reflux), poor hygiene or wiping habits, holding in urine too long, constipation, bubble baths or irritants.
Adults:
Sexual activity, menopause (due to hormonal changes), use of spermicides, diaphragms, catheters or urinary surgery and chronic illness, like diabetes.
Possible complications
Children:
There is a greater risk of kidney damage if UTIs are recurrent or not properly treated early. May need imaging to rule out abnormalities.
Adults:
Usually easier to detect and treat early, but can lead to a kidney infection if untreated.
Homeopathic treatment of children vs adults

The same remedies can be used for both children and adults, as they’re free from harsh ingredients and safe for everyone.
Remedies are chosen based on symptoms, so this is where you may need to adjust your approach, as small children often can’t tell you in exact words where it hurts and what it feels like. You need to observe carefully.
Dosage and potency
Children:
Typically lower potencies (start with 6C or 30C).
Less frequent dosing (sensitive systems respond well). Wait and see.
Often respond faster due to their vitality and fewer layers of suppression.
Children can heal incredibly fast with homeopathic treatment!
Adults:
May need higher potencies or more frequent repetition depending on chronicity.
Chronic cases often involve deeper emotional layers, suppression, or complex health histories.
Remedy selection
Homeopathic remedy selection and treatment plan should be based on totality of symptoms and individual circumstances, but also:
In children, the focus is often on:
- Family dynamics
- Birth history (C-section, antibiotics)
- Developmental milestones
- Emotional states like separation anxiety or fears
In adults, more emphasis may be placed on:
- Lifestyle stressors
- Unprocessed events, grief, loss, trauma
- Hormonal cycles
- Sexual history or trauma
- Long-term medication use
Emotional expression
Children:
Emotions may show up somatically (through physical symptoms). Observation is crucial: crying during urination, clinging, or anger outbursts may guide your remedy choice.
Adults:
Often able to verbalise emotional patterns more clearly, such as suppressed anger, people-pleasing, resentment, etc.
Family-centered approach
Homeopaths often consider the mother’s (or father’s) emotional state (during pregnancy or in early childhood, or currently) as the child is bonded to their caregivers and therefore impacted by the family environment.
Treating the whole family can be beneficial, especially in recurrent childhood UTIs, to clear any underlying patterns or dynamics that put stress on the child’s (and adults’) health and wellbeing. Especially events and things that aren’t being expressed, but suppressed, can show up as unexplained physical symptoms in family members.
Common UTI remedies for children

Here are a few useful UTI remedies to treat UTI in children naturally. Observe your child and choose a remedy that best matches them. If not sure, start with Cantharis 30c.
For ease, you can dissolve a few pillules in a glass of water and give a spoonful of this to your child as one dose. Then wait and see. Repeat when symptoms come back, or if there is no response.
Sometimes symptoms change, and you may need another remedy to continue the healing process. If there is no change or improvement at all after 5 doses or a day of taking the remedy, then move on to another remedy. Acute symptoms should respond quickly to the right remedy.
Cantharis 30c
